Kenji Miyazawa's Night on the Galactic Railroad is a fantasy fairy tale about a lonely boy named Giovanni who boards a train traveling through the Milky Way with his best friend, Campanella. Left unfinished at the author's death and revised repeatedly from first draft to final form, the work journeys from the Northern Cross to the Southern Cross, gathering strange fellow travelers along the way: a scholar excavating a fossilized coastline, a man who catches and sells birds, two siblings adrift after their ocean liner struck an iceberg.

This is not merely a fantasy of the stars. It is an unanswered question wearing the shape of a train ride—"But what is true happiness?"—asked and asked again until Campanella vanishes, leaving only the words: "That's my mother over there." The train keeps moving. Giovanni is the only one left to ride it.

The influence of Night on the Galactic Railroad on Japanese culture is immeasurable. The 1985 animated film, directed by Gisaburo Sugii from Hiroshi Masumura's concept and scored by Haruomi Hosono, reimagined its characters as cats—a choice bold enough that Yodogawa later ranked it second on his all-time list of favorite films. Its motifs have passed down through Leiji Matsumoto's Galaxy Express 999 and into the music of Hikaru Utada, Kenshi Yonezu, and BUMP OF CHICKEN, while Isao Tomita placed the story within his Ihatov Symphony to mark the 100th anniversary of Miyazawa's birth. Even Hayao Miyazaki has spoken of his respect for the work.

The story was never finished. A century later, artists are still trying to finish it for him.
