Far and Near (Repin)

Far and Near (Repin)

by Ilya Efimovich Repin

Far and Near" is an autobiographical and memoir book by Ilya Repin, which has become a striking monument of Russian memoir literature. Although the collection of essays was prepared for publication as early as 1915 with the active participation and under the editorship of the artist's close friend, the writer and critic Korney Chukovsky, the book was not published until 1937, seven years after the author's death.

The core of the book consists of the artist's vivid, emotional memories of his childhood, years of study, travels, and, most importantly, the people with whom fate brought him together. The main literary feature of "Far and Near" is its striking fictionalization and dramatization of events. Repin writes not as a dry chronicler, but as a playwright: he gives any everyday episode, whether it be the arrival of a police officer or the crush of the public at an exhibition by Arkhip Kuindzhi, scenic expressiveness and passionate emotionality.

The book consists of a series of essays, each of which is perceived as a complete work of art. Portraits of contemporaries occupy a central place in the memoirs. Ivan Kramskoy appears on the pages of the book not as a frozen historical figure, but as a passionate, living hero of an exciting narrative. The artist Fyodor Vasilyev, with whom Repin traveled along the Volga, is described as a noisy, unceremonious, but infinitely talented and charming young man. The essays dedicated to gathering materials for "Barge Haulers on the Volga" are filled with the poetry of youth, the romance of discovery, and deep sympathy for the hard labor of ordinary people.

Repin possessed a phenomenal memory for human speech. The dialogues in the book "Far and Near" are written with an impeccable sense of language. All characters—from the townspeople of Chuguev and Volga fishermen to the refined professors of the Academy of Arts—possess their own unique speech characteristics. Repin's writing method was closely linked to oral creativity: before writing down an essay, he would tell the story many times to guests at Penates, honing the intonations and testing the listeners' reactions. Thanks to this, the book has preserved a unique storytelling style and a living conversational breath.

In the theoretical chapters of the book, Repin formulates his main aesthetic principles. He proclaims the cult of matter and truth in art, asserting that the artist should be interested in the very essence of life—"body as body"—rather than pure brush virtuosity or pictorialism for its own sake.

"Far and Near" is not just the autobiography of a great master; it is a deep, sincere, and priceless document of an era, revealing Repin's inner world and showing a panorama of Russian cultural life in the second half of the 19th century through the eyes of its main eyewitness.
