Published in full in 1581, ***Jerusalem Delivered*** is the masterpiece of Torquato Tasso and one of the most important works of European Renaissance literature. The poem tells a deeply idealized and dramatized version of the First Crusade, following the conquest of Jerusalem by the Christian knights led by Godfrey of Bouillon. Yet more than a historical epic, it is **an interplay of war, faith, magic, love, and tragedy**—where religious conflict becomes, at every turn, an inner one.

Tasso draws on the chivalric tradition of Ariosto's *Orlando Furioso*, but transforms it into something more melancholic and spiritual. Where Ariosto chose irony and adventure, Tasso creates **a world dominated by doubt, passion, and fate.** His characters live in constant tension between love and duty, desire and faith, military glory and personal torment.

Among the poem's most celebrated figures: **Clorinda**, a Saracen warrior loved by the Christian knight Tancredi; **Armida**, a seductive sorceress who sets out to destroy the crusaders and finds herself destroyed by love instead; and **Erminia**, a princess loving hopelessly and from a distance. The scene of Clorinda's death—baptized by Tancredi in her final moments—has become one of the most celebrated passages in Italian literature and one of the enduring symbols of Renaissance tragic love.

The poem's influence moved swiftly across every art form. **Delacroix**, **Poussin**, and **Tiepolo** brought its scenes to canvas. **Monteverdi** composed *Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda* directly from its pages. **Handel**, **Vivaldi**, and **Rossini** transformed its episodes into opera. **Spenser** drew from it for *The Faerie Queene*. **Milton** looked to Tasso as one of the great models of the modern religious epic.
