Shenyin Yu (Grumbling Words) is a collection of notes exploring the philosophy of life. The book consists of six volumes: the first three are Inner Chapters, and the last three are Outer Chapters. The Outer Chapters cover seventeen sections including Heaven and Earth, World Trends, Sages and Worthies, Character Assessment, Governance, Human Nature, Physics/Logic, Broad Metaphors, and Literary Composition. The work is broad in scope and deeply insightful, reflecting the author's experiences of society, politics, and worldly affairs, as well as his relentless search for truth. It sparkles with philosophical brilliance and expresses his loathing for the declining political and social atmosphere of the time. It demonstrates his flexible, practical, and integrative thinking across various schools of thought. Shenyin Yu is largely based on Confucian thought but incorporates the essence of Taoism, Legalism, Mohism, and other schools, combined with the author's own experiences in the bureaucracy and his unique feelings about the ups and downs of human life.
