First broadcast on July 30, 1972 on ZDF, The Secret of the Old Mamsell is a television film directed by Herbert Ballmann, adapted from the celebrated novel of the same name by E. Marlitt. At its center is the young Felicitas Orlowski, who is taken into a wealthy household and begins, gradually, to uncover the dark family secrets buried within it.

The adaptation follows the novel's plot closely while condensing and simplifying it for the screen. What it preserves are the story's essential tensions: social exclusion, the weight of origin, the mechanics of power — and, above all, the quiet, determined self-assertion of a woman who refuses to disappear.

A Form That Remembers Its Origins

The film's presentation is aesthetically deliberate. Individual episodes are connected by rolling title cards, their content spoken aloud by an off-screen narrator — a technique that consciously recalls the novel's original life as a serialized feuilleton in the magazine Die Gartenlaube. The form does not merely tell the story. It remembers where the story came from.

Alongside Follina, important roles were played by Brigitte Horney, Inge Langen, and Heinz Weiss Kraeft. The production also marked the debut of the newly founded Berlin company Charmier-Film, which would go on to produce several further Marlitt adaptations.

"The Secret of the Old Mamsell" is a story about what wealthy households keep hidden — and about the kind of woman it takes to bring those secrets into the light.
