The Second Volume of Sienkiewicz's Legendary Trilogy
A National Epic of Survival, Honor, and Redemption
Adapted into One of the Greatest Polish Historical Films
A Monument of Polish Literature
A nation swallowed by flood. One man's fall — and the long road back.
First published in 1886, The Deluge is the second part of Henryk Sienkiewicz's legendary Trilogy, preceded by With Fire and Sword and followed by Pan Wołodyjowski. Set during the Swedish invasion of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth — the catastrophic conflict known as the Swedish Deluge — it is not merely a war novel. It is an anatomy of moral collapse and reconstruction: what it means to fall, to be lost, and to fight your way back to honor.
At its center stands Andrzej Kmicic — young, reckless, and brilliant. His fiery temperament and fatal associations drag him into disgrace. But war has a way of burning away everything false. Under the influence of battle, of love for Oleńka Billewiczówna, and of his own unextinguished conscience, Kmicic is slowly, painfully remade. He does not simply become a hero. He earns the right to be called one.
"The Deluge was written to uplift hearts — and for over a century, it has not stopped." —a reflection echoed across generations of Polish readers
The reverberations of this novel have never ceased. The defense of Jasna Góra monastery against Swedish forces — where Kmicic fights in secret, under the assumed name Babinicz — became one of the most iconic scenes in all of Polish literature: a symbol of national spirit, Catholic faith, and the possibility of redemption. In 1974, director Jerzy Hoffman brought the novel to the screen, with Daniel Olbrychski as Kmicic, in a film now regarded as one of the greatest achievements of Polish historical cinema.
The Deluge is a novel about a country that refused to disappear — and a man who refused to stay fallen.
