It covers a wide range of subjects with strong intuitive insights, reflecting the author's experiences with society, politics, and worldly affairs, as well as his relentless search for truth. It flickers with philosophical sparks and expresses his detestation of the declining political and social atmosphere of the time. The work showcases his flexible, practical, and integrative thinking. Groans is written in an aphoristic, essay-like style, recorded as thoughts occurred. The writing is flexible, with the length of passages following the flow of ideas.
