*Poesías* (1919) is one of the most important posthumous collections by Rubén Darío and serves as a synthesis of his entire poetic universe. More than just a book, it represents the consolidation of a literary revolution that forever transformed poetry in the Spanish language.
This collection brings together many of the essential features of Darian aesthetics: the musicality of the verse, the influence of French Symbolism and Parnassianism, a taste for exoticism, sensuality, classical mythology, and the obsessive search for beauty. Swans, gardens, marbles, precious stones, and unreal landscapes form part of an imaginary that made Darío the greatest representative of Hispanic Modernism.
However, *Poesías* is not only a celebration of beauty. It also reflects the author's most intimate and anguished dimension. In many poems, the awareness of the passage of time, the fear of death, and a sense of existential emptiness appear. In texts such as *Lo fatal*, Darío expresses one of the deepest spiritual crises of modernist poetry:
“there is no grief quite like the grief of being alive.”
The work thus shows the permanent contrast between the desire for pleasure and the awareness of human suffering. Eroticism, central to all his poetry, ceases to be purely sensual and becomes a search for transcendence. Woman, the body, and love appear associated with the sacred, the mysterious, and the unreachable.
In addition to its thematic importance, *Poesías* stands out for its formal innovation. Darío profoundly renewed Spanish metrics by incorporating rhythms, musicalities, and structures inspired by French and Italian poetry. Thanks to him, Spanish verse acquired a flexibility and sonic richness unknown until then.
The influence of this book and of all Darío's work was immense. Poets such as Antonio Machado, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Federico García Lorca, and Pablo Neruda recognized, in one way or another, the mark of Rubén Darío on 20th-century poetry.
