The Homeric Hymns are a collection of ancient Greek hymns addressed to gods such as Demeter, Apollo, Hermes, Aphrodite, Dionysus, Athena, and Poseidon. Some are brief invocations, almost like openings before performance; others become substantial mythic narratives, preserving stories of divine birth, power, desire, loss, and worship.

Author and Homeric Tradition

Although called Homeric, the hymns should not be treated simply as works personally written by Homer. Homer's biography is uncertain, and ancient tradition often attached his name to poems that shared the meter, diction, and epic language of the Iliad and the Odyssey. The name points to a tradition as much as to an author.

In modern terms, they resemble origin stories and companion pieces in a large fantasy universe: shorter than the main saga, but essential for understanding the gods who shape it.
