Published in 1896, ***Der Judenstaat*** ("The Jewish State") — full title: *The Jewish State: An Attempt at a Modern Solution to the Jewish Question* — is a political pamphlet by Theodor Herzl and one of the most consequential texts of the modern era. Its argument was as clear as it was radical: **antisemitism in Europe could not be overcome through assimilation**. No degree of integration would cause the Jewish population to be seen as anything other than outsiders. The only answer was sovereignty.

Herzl refused to frame the Jewish question as a religious matter. It was, he insisted, **a national and political problem** — and it demanded a national and political solution. A state of their own would give Jews security, freedom, and self-determination that no host nation had proven willing to guarantee.
