During the more than fifty days since June 1st of this year, I made errors in line and direction while guiding the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. I should bear the primary responsibility for this error. Other comrades, such as other leading comrades of the Central Committee in Beijing, leading comrades of certain ministries and commissions of the State Council, leading comrades of the new Beijing Municipal Committee, leading comrades of certain work groups, and leading comrades of certain localities, also bear a certain responsibility; however, the person who should bear the first responsibility is me." —— Liu Shaoqi's self-examination at the Central Work Conference (October 23, 1966, excerpt)
This book is divided into two volumes. The second volume comprises a compilation of historical materials on Liu Shaoqi during the Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1968, as well as documents from the CPC Central Committee regarding Liu Shaoqi's rehabilitation in the 1980s. Through the first-hand historical materials compiled and organized in this book—including Liu Shaoqi's instructions to various units and his various public or semi-public 'self-examinations'—readers will be able to gain a deeper understanding of how Mao Zedong utilized 'proletarian struggle' to suppress political opponents during the Cultural Revolution.
